Centerpoint Marriage Ministry

A man shall leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.  This is a profound mystery. . .Ephesians 5:31-32

“Marriage is God’s idea…there’s no relationship between human beings that is greater or more important than marriage.” Timothy Keller

Marriage Mentoring

Are you experiencing God’s intended purposes in your marriage?  Are there ways you want to see your marriage grow or be strengthened? Are you preparing for marriage and looking for another couple to encourage and help you along the way?

Marriage mentors are mature couples committed and equipped to walk alongside other couples interested in building and sustaining healthy, biblically grounded marriages – no matter what stage of life or marriage they’re in. If you answered “yes” to any of the questions above, we would love to connect you with one of our mentor couples so that you can meet with them and talk about steps to take together.

You can read a short bio for each of our mentor couples below. If you’re interested, contact Mike or Denise Helsabeck who lead our Marriage Mentoring ministry, and they can answer your questions and get you started with one of our mentor couples.

Marriage Mentors Team

  • Mike & Denise Helsabeck

Mike and Denise became followers of Christ in college through the Navigator discipleship ministry where they first met.  Married in 1986, their years together include 28 years traveling with the Air Force, discipling singles and couples wherever they lived, raising 4 wonderful (and unique) children, and treasuring 8 amazing grandchildren.  They love bringing their many life experiences, God’s word and listening ears into one-on-one relationships to encourage couples in the most difficult task of becoming one with Christ and each other.

  • Luis & Gloria Ortiz

Luis and Gloria, both transplants to Hampton Roads, met in 1993.  They have been married since 1994 and have 2 wonderful sons.  Over the years they have served in several ministries. In this season of life, their hearts have opened to be marriage mentors.  They have walked through many challenges of life and marriage.  Remembering their journey, Christ has been their hope and strength – often shared through the love and prayer of couples who walked along their side.  They look forward to coming alongside other couples to love them, pray with them, and share the power of Christ and the joy of marriage.

  • Steven & Amy Hervey

Steven and Amy met during their freshman year of college and have been married since 1999.  They have three adult children living in another state and a teenage son living in their home.  Steven was a pastor for 10 years before joining the Navy as a chaplain in 2011.  As a military family, Steven and Amy understand the challenges frequent moves and long separations can bring to any family.  Their desire is to share their life experiences and biblical principles as a means to help couples grow close to one another and become more like Christ.

  • Fred & Janet Butterfield

Fred and Janet met through a campus ministry while he was in college.  They married in 1978 and are blessed with two sons, two daughters-in-love, and seven grandchildren.  Fred retired from the Navy in 1994, and they lived in Northern Virginia for 24 years until God called them together into vocational ministry.  They’ve served in Hampton Roads with Cru Military since 2016, conducting spiritual mentoring and discipleship primarily with young adults — with Janet working closely with military wives and mothers, and Fred working with Naval ROTC midshipmen at Regent University.  They both have a particular heart for ministering to couples through premarital and marriage mentoring.

  • Pastor Chris & Helen Williams

Chris and Helen met in their college years and have been married since 1985.  They have three married children and four grandchildren – a source of great joy for them.  Their life together includes 22 years in the Navy with the challenges of frequent moves and long separations.  These were also formative years, growing them in their faith and giving them experiences helpful to their ministry. Chris retired from the Navy in 2007 to serve as a pastor at Centerpoint.  Helen serves in various roles in women’s ministry and with mentoring.  They have a heart to mentor couples, whether preparing for marriage, maturing in marriage, or working through the occasional struggles of marriage.
